Frequently Asked Questions about Services

How much does it cost?
If you can’t pay anything, we will still see you. We accept cash, checks, VISA, MC, and some insurance plans including OHP.
STD Clinic exams: Fees are set using sliding fee scale, based on income and family size.
Downtown CTS Program: $20 HIV test, $20 Hepatitis C test, free syphilis test for persons at highest risk
North East CTS Program: no cost
Vaccination-only visit: $15 injection fee

Are there appointments or walk-in times?
CTS: we encourage you to make an appointment for guaranteed service (we don’t need a full name) downtown. All testing at North East CTS is walk-in.

STD and vaccinations: Some people get a set time to come in. Some do not. We’ll ask you what’s going on and get you the kind of visit that works best.

What if I am under 18 years old?
In Oregon teens can consent to HIV and STD testing and treatment without a parent’s permission.

Do I need to give my name?
You can get an HIV test anonymously through our CTS. We need a name for all other tests. If you make up a name, you’ll have to be sure you remember that name when you come for results. We are very careful to protect your privacy and confidentiality here.

What kinds of HIV test do you offer?
As part of STD exam: confidential (we need your name, but keep it private), blood draw or oral, call or return for results.
At CTS (both downtown and at NE Health Center): anonymous or confidential, blood draw or oral, call or return for results. Also, rapid 20 minute test available to men who have sex with men, injection drug users, and people whose partners are living with HIV.

What tests does the STD clinic offer?
The way we check for STDs depends on what tests you want or need. We might need to check your urine (pee samples), blood (we only take what is needed) and body (genitals, skin or mouth—we do an exam and might take samples).
We can test for:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Vaginal Infections like yeast or trichomonas
  • Hepatitis C if you have ever injected drugs
  • HIV: We offer this test confidentially as part of STD exam. If you want an anonymous HIV test, or JUST an HIV test, you can get it through our CTS Program only. Our CTS Program also offers rapid 20 minute HIV tests to men who have sex with men and to people whose partners are living with HIV.
  • HPV (genital warts): Unless warts are visible, there is no specific test for them. The clinician can diagnose warts if they are visible, and refer you to clinics that provide treatment. We do not offer treatment for warts.
  • Herpes: We can do some tests for herpes if you have open sores, and offer some treatments. We do not offer the blood test for herpes, although we can refer you to clinics that do.

We are NOT able to offer: birth control (other than condoms) except in a limited capacity, pap test, general medicine/non-std problem help.

Options for telling your partners:

  • You can tell them yourself. We can help walk you through what to say, if you’d like. If you need help disclosing that you have HIV, we can give you great referrals for support as well.
  • You can tell them anonymously, or with your name, through email. Visit inspot.org/Portland to see how.
  • You can have a DIS contact them. The DIS will NEVER give your name or identifying information to a contact. The DIS WILL help the person get tested and treated, and WILL answer any questions they have about their own health.
