The LEADLINEThe LeadLine is staffed by Oregon-licensed Lead Risk Assessors in the Multnomah County Health Department's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program who can answer your questions about lead poisoning and prevention (Spanish, Russian, and Vietnamese interpreters are available on the LeadLine as needed). Information available through the LeadLine includes:
- FREE CHILDHOOD BLOOD LEAD SCREENING
Because the symptoms of lead poisoning aren't obvious, it's important to have your child's blood lead level tested. The Multnomah County Health Department and the Josiah Hill III clinic offer free childhood lead screening at various locations in the Portland area. Click www.jhillclinic.org. for dates and locations, or call the LeadLine.
- INFORMATION FOR HOME REPAIR AND REMODELING
Remodeling and home improvement projects can create a lot of harmful lead dust. The LeadLine can provide do-it-yourselfers and remodelers with recommendations and printed brochures on lead-safe work practices.- REDUCING HOME LEAD HAZARDS: Information, workshops and services
What are the sources of childhood lead poisoning? How do I know if my house is safe for my child? How do I get rid of the lead in my home? Our LeadLine staff can help answer these questions and provide information on local programs and services available to assist in identifying and reducing home lead hazards, including those offered by our community-based partners:
The Community Energy Project offers free lead poisoning prevention workshops to teach participants about the dangerous effects and common sources of lead poisoning, basic prevention measures, and resources for additional help. Portland residents receive free kits of lead poisoning prevention materials, including cleaning supplies and Lead Check(tm) test swabs. In addition, workshop participants may sign up for the free HEPA vacuum lending program to remove hazardous lead dust from their homes. Interested? Click here for dates and locations of these and other workshops, or call the LeadLine.
Growing Gardens offers free soil testing for lead to qualified households. Call the LeadLine for more information.
The Community Alliance of Tenants provides information to renters on issues such as repairs, lead hazard disclosure, deposits, screening, rent increases, evictions and more. Click http://www.oregoncat.org/index.html#Programs or call their Renters' Rights Hotline at 503-288-0130.
- FREE TAP WATER TESTING
Although Portland's source water rarely contains detectable lead, a house's plumbing may contain lead that can get into the tap water. Call the LeadLine for information on free water testing.
