NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT
An excellent way to assess nutritional status is by using the BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analyzer) to estimate your body composition. This instrument is able to estimate the amount of fat and non-fat compartments. Within the non-fat compartment it is able to estimate the amount of muscle mass, water, and other non-fat elements. It is the muscle mass that we are most interested in tracking as it reflects the overall health status of your body. The BIA test, its results, and interpretations can be obtained within the nutritionist appointment. It is a very simple, quick and painless test and should be done every one to three months.
Another good way to assess nutritional status is by evaluating your typical food intake and its frequency. This can be performed through a diet recall or a food diary. The purpose of this evaluation is to see if you are meeting your nutrient needs, rather than to see how 'good' or 'bad' your diet may be. I recommend this evaluation every one to six months, to see if you need assistance or suggestions in finding ways to nourish your body well.
EXCERCISE
Besides good nutrition, regular exercise is necessary to condition your muscle mass and keep you in good overall health . I emphasize regular resistance-type exercise to build up and tone your muscle mass. However, it is not necessary to lift weights or to strain yourself to gain some benefit. A simple but regular exercise program can also offer you rewards. To this end, we have an optional, local Exercise Buddy Program. It is an excellent way to encourage you to exercise on a regular basis, learn new techniques and how to reduce potential injuries, get support, and create new friendship.
